This American Life

While listening to the recording on our teachers blog i couldn't help, but laugh to some of the things that some of the students said. for example, when they interviewed a middle school girl going to her dance i laughed when she said "i don't know" to the 5 boys who asked her out to the dance. this socially awkward moment is completely describe in Kerlavage's article on the social emotional development of the middle school learner. they also focus more on who is in and who is out, like the class activity we did in groups about 11 year old in their social development. in the interview about the girl thinking about if her shoes would define her, i remember how i used to feel like the whole world was watching every single bit of me. it was a tough time to live with, but how the girl in the beginning of the recording said, you can't change it because it prepares you for what you are going to deal with in life.

  1. I agree that a lot of the comments by the middle school students were very comical in that they were reminiscent of how we were feeling at that time. The hesitance and nervousness of going to the dance and what to wear is definitely a normal feeling at that age. I think this lack of confidence has to do with how they are trying to figure out who they are. They are in that awkward period of being between childhood and adulthood and don't know where they fit in. This idea is prevalent in the readings and discussions we have been having and is definitely important to keep in mind in discussion of teaching this age group.
